Discussion Biremes. Are they now usless/obsolete?

I see that birs are now useless compared to ground units because they can't even stop hardly any transport boats if there are enough ls? How does that make any sense? The whole point of having a defensive navy is to stop most (over 90%) offensive land units from even touching your city. Has it always been this way or is it a new thing. Because now it seems irrelevant if the harbor is clear, since 90% of offensive land units get through even if there are still birs in the city, which makes 0 sense. Has it always been this way or was this in one of the updates? Because its completely broken and makes birs obsolete, since their main purpose in the game doesn't even work. Completely absurd :pro:

First off, stacked birs can definitely be useful in naval defense. What good is the conquerors land troops when the cs is destroyed? Sure for a raid they might be more useless. Secondly, I find that all trans should be accompanied by enough LS to destroy one bir, otherwise all the trans and troops die. Even when 1 bir dies though, the rest will take out a good deal of trans, causing irritation for the enemy, assuming they rather want the trans alive than dead.

it is usefull holding a seige in conquest
and as shadis said its can be good against CS..for raids most people dodge it and then brings back forces for the main attacks or CS attack.
the original revolt attack is most of the time the last attack (if he has not many revolt researched cities) so in the last one the LS is least. if u snipe it with a few brieme thats it.

bireme is useful when you use it too your advantage...and its awefully funny when some noob attacks with no LS escort even 1 br can destroy them all :D

Well I only play revolt worlds so don't know about conquest. The main point in the revolt world is to stop troops from reaching your city. If all someone has to do is send 100 ls to break through 300 birs with his LU then its broken. Give me the population from the birs in GU since it will benefit you a lot more since they don't need hardly any LS to break through your harbor. Its retarded! Not talking about the noobs that don't send any LS. This is full on alliance world war and when I see units able to break through and kill 100s of my DLU when I still have birs in my city its irritating. They should not be able to break through with over 90% of their units, makes no sense and completely defeats the purpose of having a navy. Pure DLU is the way to go apparently.

Not true took out 7 tranport ships which is ridiculous. Should've taken out at least half.

It has always been this way while I have played. The amount of transports lost is based on a ratio. I don't know what the exact ratio is but I believe it is based on ls to bir. More bir or less l would have ment more trans sunk.

If you send a ton of trans and troops and they come into contact with 1 brireme, all of the trans and troops die. When it comes to Ls vs Br, it's based on their attack and defence valued placed against each other... I guess you could ratio it, and then factor luck, but meh.

Was just answering his question of why he didnt sink 90% of troops like he asked. Personally I couldnt be bothered to do the ratio as I try to get plenty of Ls nukes infront. Have been out stacked before and it seems to follow a consist ratio on what is lost before making it to shore.

Hmm? For example, I once sent 51 trans and 5 LS. The 5 LS was just to break through and the 51 trans delivered my OLU to kill the guys DLU. I lost all the LS, 47 of the trans, and all the OLU, but for what I had planned it was successful.

Edit: Duh, he sent 105 LS, which is more than enough to breakthrough. Seeing as most of your birs were destroyed, most of his trans lived.

good point but DLU do no good if your wall is knocked down, A large bireme snipe will kill a cs even if troops survive so who cares. However having played this game a long time, I would swear biremes have lost some strength, I do not remember one LS nuke taking out 500 biremes in one stroke in the old days, Maybe I am crazy

Defo. not true.
In worlds I play, especially revolt 35-40% of my cities are off. troops. If the city isn't stacked up to 5-6k birs but like 20k GD, I find clearing the GD is much easier, considering rebuilding/building off. nukes are much quicked than ls nukes :p

When I first read the title I thought to my self this is outrageous. How does it become possible to snipe a CS if you don't have biremes. Like big deal if a transport slips away. Also Samurai it can be difficult to clear ground troops if there is a 25 wall and guard tower. It can be annoying...

Like everyone else said birs are essential for sinking enemy CS. What is the point of having your Offensive units land if the CS is sunk. Also even sinking a few transports sound appealing. As an attacker I am often frustrated when I know that a good amount of my troops were sunk without being able to do anything.

@DENI3D
In rebalancing they "will decrease the overall chance for a transport ship to breakthrough by 30%" for any city that does not have breakthrough researched. Since few players bother to do so you will find the amount of transports sunk to increase making the bireme a more potent defense.

...defenders will not get any more advantages, sorry but it is very fair

Pretty much a 1k biremes in a harbor is a great position to be in if all of them are yours. :)
