I have suggested a similar idea before re improved chat.
There are currently several ideas of this nature in ideas/development/improvement.
I have seen other ideas of a similar nature in the past.

Are we seing a recurrant theme here? PEOPLE WANT IMPROVED CHAT.

Would it be possible to in some way merge all these chat function improvements into one thread so that the comments and ideas are not diluted accross threads? Or even better, get this to the devs ASAP abecause over the last 3 years I have consistantly seen it posted and commented upon positively.

As with the rest of the chat system, the whole things need upgrading. Though I don't think this is really needed, it would be kinda nice to have the suggested notification.

It is very true. Most people just use skype now.
