Discussion Colonize or conquer

Looking ahead, I can see that I have a decision to make. Should I colonize when I get to that point or delay a 2nd city till I can conquer. Any advice?

I am inclined to colonize as soon as I have the capability and then continue on to conquer. I know that part of that inclination is eagerness to get to two cities and am concerned that the resources that would be required would be better spent on the ability to conquer.

Thanks.

(disclaimer... I'm a noob to Grepo... and am still gearing up for city2 :)

I would definitely wait, and then conquer. Why start a city from scratch, when with a little more patience, can get one with infrastructure already there to give a helping hand? lol.

2cents forked over :)

That depends on your position and situation but in your case I will advice you to colonize first city near your first, not far than two islands

You are absolutely right and I would have done so if I were in your place but let us consider 2 situations
1) You are new to the game, trying hard to get conquest so that you can conquer a big city but another bigger and experienced player started attacking you and you got conquered before even conquering a city, now you will have to restart from 175 again.
2)You are new to the game, reached 2000 points got a cs and colonized near you main city(and maybe just next to that),now although you have to build city from 750 but if you are active then you can get it to 2000 in 2-3 days easily,so now you have 2 cities near each other each +2000 points and if now somebody attacks you then you can fight better with force from 2 cities

(Just my views)

if you decide to colonize, at least pick an island with farming villages

Thanks for the input! I had noticed that some islands don't have farming villages, that one I had figured out. I am on an island with three other active players, one of whom stole a city from a player who started when I did. So I had seen situation 1 happen.

I would advise conquering I think colonizing is in most cases just a way to avoid fighting. Why colonize a 700 point city when you can get a 4 or 5k point city easily with conquering.

Conquering is a much better investment of resources, time and effort, and you get a bigger city by the end of it. If you colonise, you'll have to build the city up before it becoms much use so the city isn't very useful for a few weeks (depending on world speed).

The only time it would be advisable to colonise is for the location but even that is an extreme case.

Also you need to colonise sometime if you want to play hero worlds.

That last post is a decent point. On all worlds I have played on my first city has always been colonised unless I can find a decent ghost town but I like choosing the position of my second city as they both then form the basis of building an Empire so i would say colonise the first one but any after that look at just conquering as it saves time, precious resources and gets you battle points to conquer more cities.

You can almost always find a well positioned and large enough city to conquer, and you can pretty much choose whatever direction or position you want. The only place you'd really be able to colonise so early in the game is on the islands without FVs, which is definitely a bad idea where that extra resource income from FVs are so beneficial early game. Many, if not all, alliances I have been in would kick players who colonised without permission. Big points don't always mean difficult conquers and as long as you kill stuff it benefits you in the long run.

I would only say colonise later in the game under extreme circumstances (or for the HT award) because conquering will always yield better results 99.99% of the time, but as always you can choose how to play. It just isn't a very good investment of time and resources and for me Grepolis is all about efficiency and how you use what you've got.

for your second city u should look out for ghost if u can't definatly conquer otherwise ;) but later into the game u should chose tactical positioning rather then points, i.e. chose positioning over taking more points so sometimes to found a city is better then conquering... :)

I only colonize if my alliance needs a city in a certain place and there are no nearby cities to conquer

e.g. a WW island

I would really think it depends on location. For example, in one world, I am literally hours away from anyone else in my alliance. In order to offer myself some degree of mutual support, colonizing a city on a nearby island would help. It may not be the best answer, but it would help serve as a location to help fortify my position. Even if you colonized a city on an island that didn't have any FV, it's not entirely too bad. Yes, I would lose out on a ton of resources, however, with a city on that type of island, you have less pressure to sit there and demand resources. Demanding can get very time consuming as you get more cities. As much as we all love the game, spending more time demanding isn't always possible.

I see two mentions of the colonizing city starting at 750 points instead of the 175, how is this possible? Do you start out with more buildings when you colonize??

This!

Seriously - you need a city in a strategic place, close to other players etc? just conquer a city there! I mean come on, there must some city in the area you are interested in,even if its 1k city, its better than making a new one! What sort of an alliance fortyfies an area where there are no cities and you have to make a new one??!! LOL If there are no cities, it means that the area is out of the map and its worthless... if you plan to guard your backs, then conquer new players who start there, but dont make a new city, seriously....

The first city I took in this game was 4k one, when mine had only like 4-5k. I was shouting at people who would even consider taking anything smaller than 3k but at the end of the day as i said - better to take even terrbile 1k than to build a new one. It will not make you stronger. It will not help you or your alliance - tell me how in the world new small village can make you any stronger? I would prefer to have a nice good factory of units few hours away rather than to start a new town. The worst are people making colonies on islands where there are no farms lol

Bottom line - you want to stay far behind good players? build a new city...You want to get strong quickly? Take one!

If you can conquer and have enemies, conquer them.
If you can't conquer any cities or players from being too powerful or any other reason, then colonize.

Your New City
A city created by Colonizing will start out with 778 points and will have:

Timber camp: level 15
Quarry: level 15
Silver mine: level 12
Senate: level 10
Farm: level 10
Warehouse: level 10
Wall: level 2
Cave: level 2
Barracks: level 4
Agora: level 1
The only troops in the city will be those that arrived with the Colony Ship as escorts. They are considered support troops, and will not be available for use in that city.

I'm really new to this game. I'm wondering why, when comparing the two, people are not mentioning colonizing can happen much earlier than conquest? I'm at a little over 2000 points and it looks to me colonization is within reach but conquest is a far way off.

Colonizing is basically starting fresh from 1 on everything but it's really easier and you'll save a lot of troops and time.

Conquering is taking over another players city which means cleaning out his cities defenses but also gaining his current points, etc.
