You've obviously not played gamma if thats the biggest you've seen, there was once a 600+ LS nuke, needless to say the player got a ban... :p

actually, in an academy, after you have reached level 30 and used all your research points, you can destroy the academy whilst keeping all your research. this means you can have a free 80 or so pop (academy lvl1) and still have plow, ram, phalanx etc. enabled.
that 8 ls can make a big difference occasionally, as we have all seen before. (yes even me with my lack of abp) the same goes the other way for biremes. I haven't actually tried this myself, but I have been bolted in the academy without losing anything I have researched, (the same applies to silver in caves)

huh. it worked when I was bolted in the academy and cave a month ago. maybe it only works if you are bolted and not if you demolish it. I guess I will have to do some experimenting.

ah bolting maybe different......

but what the chances of you bolting the academy down to level 1 :p

is it worth it for the perfect nuke? every 1.2 hours until you strike lucky 29 times. all for 8 extra ls.

That is why the best is to keep the academy at 2 or 3. If a lucky bolt gets its down a level, you have time to rebuild it.

Academy and cave

Wellwellwell.

I trusted the ol' patch info and guess what, it was wrong. So, it seems I can downgrade my academy once the research is done. I stand humbled and corrected, it seems once the research is done, a high level academy is only good for the city festivals, which are still the most cost efficient (if least fun) way to get CP..

The maths, indeed, do not lie. A level 28 academy (necessary for battering ram) will take up 84 pop. Let's just say you squeeze out an additional 6 pop from somewhere. You can have an extra 9 LS. That means (at 200 naval attack per piece) 1800 extra naval attack. Let's say you have 259 LS this way (for the sake of picking a number). That gives you a total number of 259*200 = 51800 naval attack, going up to 56980 with favourable wind.
Without those 9 LS, your total naval attack from 250 ships is 250*200 = 50000. With battering rams, this goes up to 50000 * 1.1 = 55000. With favourable wind this goes up to 60000 (or 60500 if it's *1.1*1.1 instead of *1.2, not too sure which applies. Also, your ships will be built 10% faster, cheaper and be 10% quicker. Academy 0 or level mickey mouse to squeeze out a few LS (or attack troops) more is not all that great, says the unlying maths ;)

What?

Taking down the academy is not an option for me. When you get up over 80 cities you need to have every way possible to generate CP.

I am working on a city at the moment to see how big of a LS nuke I can create. I will post when I am done but I am sure I will break the 300 mark.

300 mark is easy enough. I'm sure jmrr can show you some reports, :D
they take a bit longer to rebuild due to the lack of farming force, you need to constantly pool in resources.

Each unit has a certain amount of attack power. In the case of LS, it's 200 naval attack. If you have 250 LS, they have a combined attack value of 200 times 250, which is 50.000. If you have battering ram researched, it adds 10% to this, meaning the total attack value is 50.000 times 1.1, which is 55.000. If you cast favourable wind, you add another 10%, so it goes up to 60.000. Whereas, an academy takes up population spaces. If you free those, you can build maybe 9 LS more, which add 9 times 200 to the 50.000, which is then 50.000 plus 1.800, equals 51.800, a little over 57.000 with favourable wind. Does that answer your indepth question of "What"? ;)

I think he meant why were you mixing attack power with farm spaces....

No,not really, but it does make you sound like a nerd.

Well, yes,I do understand what you are saying, but what sort of person has that kind of time on their hands to research those kind of stats....for a browser game.

Only one answer comes to mind.

Well guys if you ask the ladies, they will tell you that size  DOES matter :p, where as any man will tell you it's not the size that counts, it's what you do with it. ;)

At the end of the day i don't think it rally matters, as i have known players with lots of troops even a defensive fortress who lost there city's to an attacking force of 800 troops with a cs, simply because they did not know what to do with them. :p

The moral of the tale is, it does not matter what size your city is and what is in it, if you don't know what to do with it in the first place, then you may as well give it to someone else to play with that does. :)

P.s. when i say lots of defensive troops i mean 600 swords, 700 archers and 500 hops.

Oh, goodness, the time I spent on this "research", my friend. It must have been, gosh, seconds, I guess ;)
There was, oh dear, adding and subtracting and even some multiplying involved.

And yes, I'm a nerd, try a better insult next time, I can mail you a few suggestions if you like :D

I thought the topic was why have more or less of your city built up and what the advantage or dis-advantage of having buildings up to high levels was?

I was trying to illustrate why just having lots of units can sometimes be worse than having slightly less units, backed by research. Alas, as (I think), sploggo pointed out, your research remains even if the Academy is taken down to a lower level, which makes my point somewhat moot.

However the point does still remains valid for everything else academy not withstanding, why max out everything else when it is not REALLY of benefit to purpose built city's for naval or troops nukes, it defeats the purpose of maximizing and optimizing the nuke.

Even a general purpose or Cs city can be negatively affected by maxing out every building you can, the saving in free pop by not doing it will help to counteract the loss of the pop used to build the Cs, thus allowing you to send more siege troops or Ls escort with it.
