Discussion Divine Envoy Totally Useless?

Is the divine envoy totally useless?

The cost of 1 divine envoy equals 1 swordsman + 1 archer + 1 slinger. It also takes up 3 farm places. That's why it makes sense to compare 1 divine envoy against 1 swordsman + 1 archer + 1 slinger.

The combination of 1 swordsman + 1 archer + 1 slinger is hereafter called "trio".

Let's compare:
Attack force: Divine envoy 35 --- Trio 36
Defence blunt weapon: Divine envoy 20 --- Trio 27
Defence sharp weapon: Divine envoy 20 --- Trio 41
Defence distance weapon: Divine envoy 20 --- Trio 44
Booty: Divine envoy 5 --- Trio 48
The divine envoy has higher speed running on land, but that is of absolutely no importance in this world of small islands.

The booty is so small that farming is reduced to a joke, and the divine envoy is inferior to the trio no matter what kind of battle would take place.

The costs can be up to debate. The daily gift may be 1000 resources of each kind OR 100 favor. As 100 favor equals 3000 resources, 15 favor (the cost of 1 divine envoy) equals 450 resources (approximately the cost of a trio). To be exact, the cost of a trio is 513 resources, but 15 favor is still more worth if used wisely, and favor is always scarce.

There are other ways to calculate favor into resources. If you have nothing else to do than using the Wedding spell to gain resources for a trio (the spell costs 60 favor and gives 525 resources), you could spend those 60 favor on 2 divine envoys instead. But even 2 divine envoys will hardly be better than a trio taken into account that the 2 divine envoys will take up twice as many farm places. The attack force will be twice as strong, but if you build the trio, you can attack with the slinger and let the defensive units stay. Also, instead of using the Wedding spell, you could use the Happiness spell on a big city to get more resources. It's hard to see that the divine envoy is anything more than totally useless.

Yes Susan, they suck. And bad! LOL! ;)

Better used as an attacking unit, if your going to use them at all.

At the start of the game where you are mostly busy with your city building you also have to capture the farming villages. It is useful to recruit Devin Envoys for that purpose. Since you need to fill certain amount of population to capture each farm, the extra lode of DE (3 pop) makes them ideal and you don't have to worry about the enemy getting too much BPs here.
DE do not need any resources so the idea is to use resources for city building, usual recruitment and researches and use all of the favors for DE who will serve as Farm capturing and emergency land defense units (they are low but balanced in defense).

Example: To capture the last farm you need 1000 population of troops in which 175 Horsemen (525 pop) to attack with, which is a lot of time (3357 min) and resource (226,800). Instead, one can recruit 270 DE (810 pop, 2515.5 min and 4050 fav = 121,500 res)

I totally disagree...while spending your resources on buildings, don't make divine envoy with favor. Your better off getting hera and using her 200 resource spell, which can be used for offensive troops. Plus although they have a well balance def, they aren't as worth it as swords or archer, being worth three pop and all. Three swords=1 envoy (pop). Plus when one envoy dies, the opponent gets 3 BP for it. I only build envoys in emergencies and use that free one as a trip.

If passionate population spells work to reduce favor resources for divine envoys that would be a benefit. Anyone know?

Divine Envoys have three particular uses.

1) Favour farming - Each unit gains 5 favor per attack, making it much more effective than favour farming with a flyer or other expensive myth. Also since you can have many, you can attack multiple cities with only 100 Divine Envoys each. Upon each attacks return, you will have a full inventory of favour to produce more myths. By doing this, you can have constant production of myth units.

2) CS Escort (Conquest servers) - Much like hoplites and chariots, divine envoys both attack and defend. If you are conquering someone who snipes a CS, you have a higher chance of being able to land. (Hitting militia and possible ALU snipe)

3) Blind siege support - Since divine envoys have equal defensive values of the three types, sending to a siege helps prepare it equally against any potential attack type.
