The true measure of on alliances strength is their number of cities, as this sets the limit on their military potential (farm spaces), and later their economic potential (resources generated) to develop the World Wonders that will win this world. Each alliances number of cities can be seen easily here:

Less obvious though, is the rate at which alliances are currently gaining cities. I was surprised by some of the fastest growing alliances (by numbers of cities gained in the last 30 days) on this graph. As some of the larger alliances wage war on each other, some of the other alliances are gaining cities through recruitment or easier conquests:
In particular, Nordic Nightmares seem a little sluggish in their rate of city accumulation given their size. Their wars seem to be taking a toll on their development.
