Basically, Gandalf the Grey is the Original Version of the Maia Olorin who was confined to human form and sent to Middle earth. Originally, There were for Istari, or wizards, and each had a different color based basically on how powerful they were. They were, in order from most to least powerful:
Saruman The White
Gandalf The Grey
Radagast The Brown
Alatar & Pallando The Blue(Both were "Blue" Wizards and Equal in Power)
Now what happened was That in a nutshell Saruman Started Screwing up. He started wanting the One Ring for himself, so much that when he started Communicating with Sauron through the palantiri, he was completely corrupted. And On top of this, he was totally jealous of Gandalf since Cirdan the Shipwright had given Gandalf Nenya, The Ring of fire instead of giving it to Saruman(Long Story).
When Gandalf Died while fighting the Balrog in Khazad-Dum, He was sent back by The Valar as Gandalf the white, In Order to replace Saruman as the white wizard, since saruman was totally corrupted.
