Apologies I'll try and simplify. Tripping is a basic technique used by many players in order to be notified when a city is attacked. They do this by sending support to the city then they receive a your support in X city has been attacked notification. They can then check if the city in question is under siege and avoid losing cities uncontested. It's a relatively common practice.

The alternative of course is to wipe out a cities defence behind a huge wall using griffs then kill off your allies trips and leave a nice big gap for your enemy to land their cs in. Both techniques have their own merits.
