Does someone know what exactly the merchant's shop does?

There was a thread on rebalancing but I'm not sure that ever happened.
Wiki doesn't mention Phoenician Trader and another Question in this section seemed to have an outdated answer saying that it reduced ratio from 0.67 to 0.5 (it is 0.5 without Shop currently)

The most imporant feature of the merchant shop is increasing the possible amount of goods you can trade. Merchant shop is only useful once the game reaches WW stage and You need to start shipping tons of resources. Has absolutely no use what-so-ever before WW.
