Newspaper Poems for Carystus

Silver Witch

Strategos
Ok so Bearissimus is using a competition for his newspaper so i thought i would use a newspaper for my poems. Hope thats ok Magik

This is a poem thread - anyone can have a go. Lets get a bit of culture going.

Im going to start with one based on the weather report. Please refer to competition thread (thats another one that is not a competition this world is already mad!).

WINTER

In the heart of World Carystus,
Deep beneath the winter snows,
Our Wise One says that Evil lurks,
And slowly stronger grows.
He warns the world to strangle,
The baby shoots while young,
Lest Evil once to manhood grown,
May never be undone.

The warriors of the centre,
Amongst themselves wage war,
Their individual aims and needs,
For now they put before.
Does this portend disaster?
Alliances of the world beware,
For those protecting 55,
Say they do not care.

To those who border 55,
Come closer whilst ye may,
Bring forward your attacking troops,
Lest Evil win the day.
Chase away those demons,
Do not rest ere this is done,
Then fight, defend, build, break and mend,
Until this world is won.

P.S. For those not in the know 'Wise One' is a nickname for Bear - possibly facetious - you decide.

There once was a cool silver witch
Whose poems were clever and rich
Her idea of fun
Upset almost no-one,
And everyone called her a very nice person, actually.

Just can't make that last line rhyme or scan. :)

Once upon a time,
in an ocean so divine
Called o 55,
there stood a little group
called savages or somethin,
God bless this food
Brought their egos to 2 servers
within a week they're sunken
good bye and.. oh hey
today's veterans' day
thank you much for your service

half of this rhymes when i read in my accent, sorry to all the rest that speak more properly than i do :)

INVICTA

Invicta has pounced like wolves from the scrub,
Smashing the stronghold of warriors Fight Club,
Their eyes are demonic, their swords flash with fire,
As they move ever onward to the crown they desire.

The waters are foaming, the sands wash with blood,
Battlements drip red like rivers in flood,
Enemies vanquished, drowned choked in the mire,
As they move ever onward to the crown they desire.

A force inexorable carves out their path,
Led by great Lisa the bringer of death,
Pray Ares for mercy, build your walls higher,
As they move ever onward to the crown they desire.

Was half tempted to do one regarding the twelve labours but that would be something that would take months and need to be part of a pamphlet/collection. Plus you cant really touch or try to compete with the iliad when it comes to ancient Greek poetry. So have a wee ten minute tweak on a more modernist classic instead.

The Appalachain

Once upon a midnight dreary, while Reinheart pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While he nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at his city door.
“’Tis some spy,” Reinheart muttered, “tapping at my city door—
Only this and nothing more.”

Open here Reinheart flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately Tuf of the saintly days of yore;
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above the city door—
Perched upon a bust of Hera just above his chamber door—
Perched, and sat with several nukes, and nothing more.

Then this Tuf to be beguiling Reinhearts sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
“Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,” he said, “art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient hoplie wandering from the Nightly shore—
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Hadeonian shore!”
Quoth the Tuf “Nevermore.”

Reinheart tried much as he may, to shoo the beast from far away,
but biremes and men of swords were all soon no more,
"you have no skill!" did Reinheart call "your timings are a folly",
If the beast heard it did not show, laying waste to Reinhearts shore-
"I beg you why must thee slight thy home? Please answer I deplore!"
Quoth the Tuf "Nevermore"

I like it - its nicely adapted. Homer might be more tricky but then again all those similes.

That's really merciful of you considering how lazy it was :) thank you.

This sort of adaptation is pretty popular in the spoken word troupe I do bits with at the moment, so thought I'd give it a try for an event i'm at next week with them (it probably won't be grep related* :().

It was a challenge trying to match the meter and stresses with the original stanzas above, especially when taking into account pauses in breath and timing when read out loud (let alone looking at how it sits on the page and how the page sits around it - Rabbit hole there). But since it was a ten min lazy botch job I didn't pain over it as much as I should have was it going to be a more serious attempt.

And with you 100% on the similes and allegories etc. I get annoyed with iambic pentameter in sonnets trying to stick to an ABBA scheme let alone the dactylic hexameter in the Iliad. Still. It's more fun than the Fairy queene.

*Or any good.

To a Leader's Decorum

Who would be King
And wear the gilded crown
Must bear the sting
With ne'er more than a frown
Whilst others rail
And curse him to his face
He cannot fail
Nor falter in the race
He must withstand
And turn the other cheek
To save his land
In truth he must stay meek
And never lose the plot with foolish bluster
Nor throw away the lot with mindless fluster.

There was a revolt brewing.
Words written on remnants of walls told us.
'THIS!' he pointed 'HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ME!.'
'The wall or the writing'? I asked
'DON'T YOU DARE BE SO RUDE' he replied.
'About writing on a wall?'
'YES WRITING!
YES WALL WRITING YES, YES!!'
I opened my mouth and stopped,
I tried and stopped again,
restraint lost to curiosity.

'Can you read the writing on the wall?'
'NO!'
'Have you done your homework?'
'NO SHUT UP AND LET ME BE IN CONTROL!'
'Ah!' I turned around to face him square on.

'No...

What are you going to do about it?'.

An anonymous leader of a certain alliance told me to take a Haiku*:

To win this mad world
Foe and friend alike must yield
Or else turn to dust.

* Or did he sat hike? No, must be a culture lover.
