This is a real beginner question as you can tell, but after you send troops to another city and you get a report that you are attacking that city, how do you take over the city if you have defeated all the defending troops of the target city? Can you have a successful attack without using the attack planner option? Is there a tutorial for attacking another city?

    Thanks/

The method you use to take over a city depends on your world settings. Follow the above links (by SjsharksBoy) respective of which it is set to in your world.

The attack planner isn't necessary, a lot of players including veterans, do not even use the attack planner. Myself included.

There is no tutorial, but a few handy tips are to always attack with offensive troops, defend with defensive troops and if attacking another island use light ships to escort your transports or you'll be likely to lose all your troops since they're vulnerable without an escort.

note pad and a calculator (depending on your math skills) is better than attack planner :p

Look at you...using a newfangled invention like a calculator! LOL!

Pencil (with eraser), piece of paper and a watch is generally sufficient for me.

i used to do that, but then all the bits of paper get muddled up :p

I went onto using notepad a few years ago, since it doesn't respond to BB code, so you can easily copy and paste to anywhere ingame.

You have a pencil? You're lucky.

I have to use a piece of coal, a clean section of pavement and a sun dial for my calculations...

 I do it without a notepad or a calculator. Just my little gray cells.
