Quick question about naval fight combined with land fight

So from what I understand sending no naval escort with your land troops will get them all killed, but what happens if you send a considerably large escort and it still dies, will you still lose all your land units? Therefore if I want an offensive city half or more than half of it should be dedicated to naval fighting because if the enemy has a lot of biremes all the land troops are useless?

You’ll lose a significant portion of your units in the harbor depending on how big the stack is. This could be a few transports or nearly every transport.
