Spells on incoming attack?

Would a player have to time casting a spell correctly for an incoming attack, or can a player just cast the spell at any time before the attack lands? Thank you

at any time. when you cast a spell on an attack it will last untill the attack lands. it doesn't matter when the spell is cast.

no you cannot.
