The Merge Concept

We see it all the time, you pact an alliance, maybe two, not looking to mra or get "friend" heavy, just looking for some good fits, and the M word comes up.

Sometimes it works out and becomes a good thing, sometimes you end up with an academy or trash bin alliance where inactive and slow growers go.

so here it is, to everyone in the player base........what makes a merge successful? what makes one fail?

The quality of alliances before the merge, and the willingness of players to accept their new allies.

There are the same people in the new alliance as there were in the two old ones...the quality doesn't improve or worsen unless players quit or become less interested after the merge or whatever.

Just like in small regional banks, if two merge, and each bring their respective 2 board members, you end up with a huge four person board. Not only is this costly and stagnant as decision taking is slower, but also egos have difficulty accepting that they don't call all or 50% of the shots. If only old board members could accept to not be board members anymore...

Same goes for alliance founders or leaders, in a balanced merge, there will simply be too many leaders for it to work well, therefore roles must be distributed well and ideally one alliances is merging "into" another one, this gives the original alliance more power in the hierarchy, and hierarchy is essential for an alliance to work.

Successful merger -well planned, lots of communication among each alliance.
lots of communication between alliances. At all levels..
Questions and concerns are valid regardless of score.
Must be wanted by the vast majority
The merger should result in a new Alliance name..creating a new identity.. for all members
Major team building battle.. using each others tactics..ideas

Well that didnt work ,did it?
Leaders organize and dictate to the rank and file wrt the merger... I Command, you obey
New folks are less than the original members
No concrete plan/way forward to build a new team
New leadership relegated to lowly positions....helps if the old alliance will give up seats/ positions to new folks
all new folks.... but same old same old way of thinking..doing things

mergers generally fail for one simply reason. why do they want to merge in the first place ? lack of activity or getting beaten badly.... you wouldnt want to merge if you were doing well. Folk think it will bring more strength... it may look it in stats but they will change quick

anyway just my thoughts :)
