Very nice work. This has really come together. Unfortunately I won't be able to continue active development as I don't have nearly as much time right now with a massive war on tw. However if I have any ideas I will be sure and let you know.

Does this sound like the way to go?
Absolutely.

Are you familiar with some sort of version control system like SVN, GIT and the likes? That's the best way to share and collaborate on open-source projects. I suggest Google Code Project Hosting. We get free hosting for the source files, version control, a wiki, and a bug tracker to boost.

edit: By the way, I don't really care about the name at all, but just for fun, I named my script "Defcon". Why? Dunno, sounds badass lolz

Always nice to have someone around to point out options. I'll have a look at google-apps and google code hosting this weekend.

Being a Quality Assurance guy I know about software development systems and how to do this in a formal way because I talk a lot with IT-folks in the company I work for. However it is my experience that non-IT professionals (like myself) easily get lost when IT-ers get enthousiastic. Its great to use tools when available and when convenient, but we should take care not to loose contact with the grepolis players that dont understand the IT-stuff.

Well, I'm by no means an expert in IT either, but if the tool is useful for the project/community, I could always provide guidance when necessary.

I can't vouche for Google AppEngine as I have never really used it, but Google Project Hosting (for SVN) is really a snap to use, and the benefits are incredible. Still, you're absolutely right about keeping the discussion as close to the community itself as possible.

If you're both willing to work together to develop this tool, perhaps it would be nice to offer it to the community, so that they're able to generate their own maps. So, the ability to highlight alliances, players, and perhaps individual towns on the map would be good.

If you can get this to come together, I will discuss the possibilities of a subforum for the future.

Thanks aac04, that is indeed what we have in mind. We know where we want to go, we dont know yet how to get there. We will do some research what google has to offer, I guess by the end of this weekend we will know more.

I smell a tw player :)

But wouldn't doing that mean paying for a server host?
Yes, I did use to play Tribalwars for a little bit :p It always had three functionalities:

- Custom Maps (example)
- "Self Updating" Maps (example)
- Interactive Maps (example)

Of which fulfilled all my mapping needs. If you're interested in creating a [more-ish] offline tool, then the self updating maps just seemed the more suitable way to go. I presume a server can automatically generate then simply upload them once every so often?

I checked out google code hosting, made an account, made a new project and put what I have in this project. I still have to figure out a lot of things tho...
