ghost cities

Why do ghost cities appear as a silhouette after they are no longer in use? The silhouettes are a little off-putting. Can't they just appear as a city to colonize?

It makes them stand out and alerts people to the fact that they will decay. I kind of like it.

Especially when they ghost on an island after constant farming. It allows us to sit back in wonder and whisper, "Did I do that?"
