Immigration- Are we in danger of ignoring the benefits?

Immigration has always been a contentious issue in nations that receive large numbers of immigrants.
In recent years, opposition to immigration has been increasing, this debate is aimed at seeing whether you feel that opposition is justified.

"Immigration is largely beneficial for a country that receives a large number of immigrants. (That is to say, there are some negative impacts, however the positives ones outweigh them)."
Discuss.

If you're in the UK, this is a very interesting documentary on the subject- http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03phwk5/The_Truth_About_Immigration/

Care to explain your view?
Otherwise it is just as useless as your first post. (nod)

If You look at countries like the UK, Germany or Sweden one can see that uncontrolled immigration causes huge problems in society. Most immigrants are from poor third-world countries (africa most of all and lately also Middle-East) without any education. many will not find a job and live on welfare, resulting from that they do not learn the language and they dont get integrated into the society so ghettos are formed and it's already very difficult to get out of those. Most European capitals and major cities are faced with this issue and one can see it every day, both on the street and in the news.
Perhaps it's a biased view, but I strongly support the very heavy regulations set in place in my own country. There are very strict quotas set in place how many immigrants are allowed in a country. The quota is less than a 1000 people every year and as far as I know even that has never been allowed.

I find a country should only accept immigrants who will benefit the country in a way. That means people qualified to work in fields where there is a lack of skilled workforce (specialists) in the country itself.

I've seen the concequences of uncontrolled immigration well myself, when my country was occupied by the soviets hundreds of thousands of immigrants flowed here from all parts of that union and even now, 25 years later, after the immigration stopped there are large social gaps between the immigrants and the native population, as the immigrants are not integrating into the society, will not learn the language and thus end up being a burden on the government.

The USA here is a bit of a different example from what's going on in Europe. 99,1% of the current population in the USA is a direct result of immigaration so the dynamics there are very different from Europe, where people have been living on their land for thousands of years, accumulating their own unique culture which is now being threatened by the immigrants. In USA immigration is part of the culture, as it's called the "melting pot of cultures".

I'm fine with immigrants coming in but I would like it to be restricted and borders to be guarded (I'm in America).

I believe immigration is not such a big deal. What's wrong with people trying to find a better home?

I never blame the immigrant who is looking for a better life for themselves and their families .. that said, I pretty much agree with ch0pperMad's view on the matter. Immigration needs strict controls, mostly to keep immigrants off the public dole as much as possible.

Well yes but then there is also Americas problem (or one of many of our problems lol) where immigrants are taking our jobs.

You mean most immigrants get the hard and dirty jobs? Which they are gladly happy to do to raise their family. Just becuase of our current work system, the lack of jobs isthe governments fault, not the immigrants.

I'm fine with immigrants if they're going to pull their weight, get a job (regardless of what it is) and not have to rely on welfare. There are plenty of immigrants who get in, then sit back and relax while the government looks after them and we pay more taxes.

Also, if they come into the UK and burn our flag they can get out right now.
