how did you lose so many def units as an attacker?

I've started to play this game with lots of def units and they when we were at peace with lots of alliances I just sent lots of them to some random cities to sacrifice since I was in need of farm space for offensive units.

And before anyone points out I have lost swords and archers in attack - ALL of these have been while farming, I even have a badge for it, sometimes my mistake, sometimes i think a lagging error and once an honest fail when i didnt know better while strengthening !!

Biremes where lost when supporting a colony ship that got sniped as I didnt have many lightships and hoped I could take some heat off the CS ina tight harbour, but failed - nothing ventured, nothing gained !!

After the last week of fighting I made it back into the top 3 pages of bp rankings! Cost me a few cities, and unfortunately this time it's dbp that put me there, but figured this wall was worth posting.
