More Than a Pastime
I remember my first game system,
The Sega Genesis, oh the joy,
Countless hours each day I would spend,
Easily becoming my top childhood toy
Aimlessly moving Sonic around,
In effort to beat my prized high score,
But the system then grew old,
And I played it no more
Then something changed,
As I heard rumors of something greater
A new system to the forefront
A PS1, the start of cause for this very letter
I was not a popular kid, you see?
Left out from select games and sport,
But when I came home it was there,
With an on button as accepting as an open door
Each day I was bullied,
Whether verbally or by fist,
I knew my PS1 was awaiting my return,
With tales of adventure I could hardly resist
These games taught me something,
Something I will not soon forget,
That when the world leaves you empty,
A new world could fill the debt
As time went on, however,
My PS1, my friend, had grown old and worn
But a new youngster fresh off the line
Was now to have my adventures reborn
The Play Station 2, or PS2 for short,
A black slim finish, beautiful simplicity,
With new graphics and features galore,
I was overjoyed with what I did see
Year after year I stormed the system,
Playing into the wee hours of morning,
What pleasure and euphoria it did provide,
I could tell a new age was dawning
Finally came along my prize, my gift,
A glorious rendition, the magnificent third
The PS3 ushered itself in in glory,
My delight, I could hardly speak a word
The friends I had finally grown to,
Were granted sovereignty in our mutual desire,
Growing closer together by way of gaming,
A bond much greater than the prior
Now I hear tales of a fourth,
A system of much awe and wonder
One I now possess and play,
With new lives and mysteries to ponder
So, what did gaming teach me?
How did it affect my plain life?
Oh, quite in a simple way, I presume,
Please, allow me to describe:
Gaming taught me how to press on,
That even if the world denies me love
That despite what comes my way,
A life is still there to be had, thereof
Gaming taught me how to think,
How to handle two things at a time,
A skill I definitely will need and use,
Thus granting me a better life
Gaming taught me how to speak,
Both fluent and intelligently, it so seems
Thus creating new goals and outlets to try,
Opening a window to brand new dreams
Gaming, I suppose, taught me how to live
How to function better on my own,
Gaming taught me there's a greater life worth living
That even when abandoned, I am never truly alone
