You are also wrong about gaddafi being funded by western powers.
Gaddafi was a fan of gamel abdel nasser, who commited a coup in egypt amongst some other high ranked soldiers.
He wanted to make the arabs proud again and wanted to set an arab identity, since the arab lands were ruled by western powers for decades.
Gaddafi fought for the same ideals, he wanted to found a arab-socialistic state, although he wasn't arab but a nomad from north-africa.
And because of the national resources libia has, the largest oil reserves of africa, he could make food and gas very cheap.
But the arab countries didn't liked him because he wasn't arab.
And when egypt singed peace with Israel he turned to the soviet union, although he was more soviet critical than reagan and nixon together...
